Hank Pearl talked about a lot of cool metal bands, comic books, and even film lighting techniques as he discussed Black Pearl Photo in episode 20 of Professional Geek Podcast! Lets take a look at all the things that were mentioned in the latest episode. I've included time codes for easier reference, and will be including them in show notes from now on.
English heavy metal band formed in 1975. Fronted by late lead singer Lemmy (Ian Fraser Kilmister), they released 22 studio albums and are widely known for influencing many bands and even entire genres.
Light that comes from sources in the scene, IE a lamp in a character's living room. Contrasted with Non-Diegetic lighting; lighting set up by the production in order to light the scene or create mood.
Film Noir (00:43:49)
Often crime and police stories, Film Noir was coined in 1946 to describe a mostly American trend of dark (both literally and in terms of mood) films. Prominent entries in the style would be The Maltese Falcon, Laura, and A Touch of Evil.
Frank Millers Sin City (00:43:57)
Frank Miller’s iconic neo-noir comic book series. The series follows several characters in a rough and tumble urban environment, tackling revenge, murder, prostitution, and other dark subjects. Notable for its lack of shades of gray; panels are all black and white.
The final legendary Pokémon, number 150, in Pokémon Red and Blue, famous for being hard to access and capture, and difficult to beat via game link if your friend had him and you didn’t. In Pokémon, MewTwo was the result of genetic testing on Pokémon 151, Mew, which resulted in MewTwo, a creature with stronger psychic abilities and a more sinister nature.
Regionally, the name for the night before halloween. Notable in pop culture for being central to the plot of The Crow. Also, strongly associated with a pattern of arson in Detroit on the night before halloween, between early 1970’s and early 1990’s.
The Metro Chicago (00:58:39)
Concert venue in Chicago, Illinois. This space has enjoyed 35 years of hosting bands and DJs, as well as events like weddings. The Metro is in on Clark street in Wrigleyville, and is known for booking both local up and coming talent as well as national stars.
Legacy rock and roll band from London, England, and major part of the “British Invasion.” The Rolling Stones are known for their blues rock influences, and also are still touring and releasing albums (a gargantuan 30 studio albums.)
